Ascending Leaders grew out of a need for discipleship and leadership development that Mike Johnson experienced while planting a church in Missouri City, Texas. Mike's Doctor of Ministry project with Fuller Theological
Seminary - a process for homegrown leadership development - was in response to this need. The Texas Leadership Development Network laid the groundwork for Ascending Leaders.
In 2004, with the insight and brainstorming of other strategic thinkers, the Texas LDN was revamped to more directly respond to the needs of the local church. Using the teaching tools that had proven most effective in spiritual growth, Mike developed a highly effective approach for encouraging discipleship and developing leaders. The result was Ascending Leaders.
Mike's strength and passion is character development. He believes that strong discipleship (growth in character) is key to healthy leadership. Even when the emphasis is primarily on discipleship, good discipleship seems to naturally result in people stepping up and taking responsibility in actions and roles of influence.
Ascending Leaders is a 501(c)3 organization. It is served by a volunteer board of directors, a small staff of salaried and contract employees and numerous volunteers. Ascending Leaders is supported financially by individual, corporate and church donations, foundation grants and book sales. All gifts are tax deductible.
